Leopard

Habitat

African lions are currently limited to sub-Saharan Africa and the protection of national parks and wildlife reserves in East Africa. Asian lions are found only in the Gir Lion Sanctuary in the hills of Western India.

Weight

Males range between 300 and 570 pounds, females range between 260 and 400 pounds.

Gestation Period

Gestation period is approximately 110 days. Females generally give birth to 3 - 5 cubs. Cubs become independent between 2 and 4 years of age.

Adaptation

The long hair along the top and sides of the neck and head of the male lion is the mane. The mane is believed to protect the lion’s face during battles and show health and fitness. The lion is the only cat in the world with tufted hair (bunch of hair) at the end of the tail and mane. Tawny colored fur provides excellent camouflage in their native habitats. Black tipped tails and ears enable pride members to stay in visual contact when in open grasslands.
